Homemade Protein bars made with Complete Whey Protein, raw almonds, chia seeds, dark chocolate and cherries!

Health Benefits of this recipe include:

The cacoa found in dark chocolate is full of anti-oxidants and serotonin, a natural antidepressant.

The flavonoids in dark chocolate help reduce insulin resistance by helping your cells to function normally and regain the ability to use your body's insulin efficiently. Dark chocolate also has a low glycemic index, meaning it won't cause huge spikes in blood sugar levels.

Chia seeds help detoxify the body and aid in weight loss.

Chia seeds contain Omega 3 Fatty acids and help dieters feel full longer.

Chia Seeds contain complex carbohydrates that are absorbed slowly and metabolized over a long time so you feel satisfied for longer periods of time.

When a chia seed is exposed to water, it forms a coating of gel, increasing its size and weight. Since the gel is made of water, it has no calories. It’s also difficult to remove from the seed, meaning that it helps your body think it is full, without adding calories!

Keeping balanced levels of blood sugar is important for both health and energy. Both the gelling action of the seed, and it’s unique combination of soluble and insoluble fiber combine to slow down your body’s conversion of starches into sugars. If you eat chia with a meal, it will help you turn your food into constant, steady energy rather than a series of ups and downs that wear you out.

Raw Almonds are a SUPER FOOD. Almonds contain: Protein, Dietary and Insoluble Fiber, Riboflavin, Niacin, Vitamin E, Thiamin, Folate, Vitamin B, Biotin, Potassium, Iron, Calcium, Zinc, Copper, Magnesium and Phosphorous.

Medjool Dates
are full of fiber, vitamins and minerals. They contain B Vitamins, Copper, Iron, Potassium, Folate, Manganese and Calcium. They help keep your bones strong and your digestive system healthy! They add great flavor as well as being a natural sweetener. Their gooey texture is ideal for creating healthy snacks you can take on the go.

Coconut oil
contains fatty acids which help boost brain function, contains Lauric acid which is highly anti-microbial, and can help you lose weight by reducing abdominal fat.

The medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil have been shown to increase 24 hour energy levels by as much as 5%, which can lead to significant weight loss over the long term.

Dried cherries are a great source of natural fiber, potassium, copper, protein, iron, and carbohydrates. The red coloring in cherries contains anthocyanin which is a powerful antioxidant which prevents free radicals from damaging our cells.

Dried Cherries
are great for your immune system as they contain vitamins A,C & E.

Raw Whey Protein can help replace fat with lean muscle which leads to a higher metabolism and increased energy.

Raw whey protein is an excellent source of cysteine, the precursor of Glutathione which is the most abundant antioxidant in the body that protects us from damage due to toxins and free radicals.

The medium chain triglycerides in coconut oil have been shown to increase 24 hour energy levels by as much as 5%, which can lead to significant weight loss over the long term.

The health benefits of coconut oil include hair care, skin care, stress relief, cholesterol level maintenance, weight loss, boosted immune system, proper digestion and regulated metabolism. It also provides relief from kidney problems, heart diseases, high blood pressure, diabetes, HIV, and cancer, while helping to improve dental quality and bone strength. These benefits of oil can be attributed to the presence of lauric acid, capric acid and caprylic acid, and their respective properties, such as antimicrobial, antioxidant, anti-fungal, antibacterial and soothing qualities.

Homemade Coconut Matcha Ice Cream October 29, 2016 08:13

Homemade Coconut Matcha Ice Cream

Make your own creamy Green Tea ice cream packed full of healthy fats, immune building amino acids and healthy antioxidants! This recipe is so easy to make!

Blend all ingredients and freeze overnight:

1 can of coconut cream (we like Trader Joe's)

1 avocado

2 scoops (1/4 cup) of Complete Whey Protein in the Creamy Vanilla flavor

4 tsp. of Matcha Green Tea powder

4 Tbsp. of Xylitol (for sweetness)

1 tsp. of Pure Vanilla extract

Dash of Himalayan Sea Salt

Squeeze of lemon juice

Benefits of the ingredients in this recipe:

Green Tea contains the antioxidant EGCG which causes your body to produce heat increasing your metabolism which burns off your body fat.

EGCG Health Benefits include Weight Loss!
Obesity has risen to epidemic proportions in many Western countries. EGCG may help you lose weight via three main mechanisms:
    •    Higher Metabolism
    •    Higher Fat Burning
    •    Reduced Fat Storage

Green tea has strong anti-inflammatory properties and thereby decreases arterial inflammation which decreases the chances of sticky build up on the artery walls. This could also lower blood pressure as it eases the heart’s task of pumping blood through less inflamed arteries.

Green Tea causes carbohydrates to be released slowly, preventing rises in blood-insulin levels and this also causes your body to burn fat. In addition to burning fat, green tea lowers cholesterol, prevents diabetes, stroke and dementia.

Other positive effects that may happen when you consume green tea on a daily basis are reduction in hair loss!

Read more about it here: Can Green Tea stop hair loss?

Coconut cream is a good fat full of lauric acid which boosts immunity and speeds up your metabolism. When lauric acid (in coconut cream) converts to monolaurin (an anti-viral, antibacterial, and antiprotozoal monoglyceride), it boosts your immune system and defends your body against many viruses. Coconut cream also improves digestion and bowel function and helps speed up your metabolism.

Avocado is rich in monounsaturated (good) fats which can reverse insulin resistance and help to regulate blood sugar levels. Perhaps the biggest health benefit of avocados is that by adding avocado to certain foods, you can improve your absorption of nutrients. This means that when you combine other fat burning foods with avocado, you can improve your nutrient absorption up to 400%!

Xylitol is like sugar, except good for you. While sugar wreaks havoc on the body, xylitol heals and repairs. It also builds immunity, protects against chronic disease & has anti-aging benefits. Xylitol is a great sugar substitute that breaks down in the body slower without causing sugar spikes. This is an ideal sweetener for Diabetics. You can find Xylitol at Sprouts and Market Street.

If you could design a perfect protein for the human body it would closely resemble Complete Whey Protein with all of the amino acids that your body needs to function at its best. Your body will love it!

What is protein and why is protein important for our health? August 24, 2015 15:38

Everything in the human body is either made of protein or is dependent on protein for its function. Everything! You could easily make the case that protein is the most important nutrient. But why is protein so important?

No other nutrient has such widespread uses in the body. Healthy fats, like omega 3’s, are used in lots of places in the body, but not everywhere. The same is true of vitamins, minerals and carbohydrates. All of these nutrients are extremely important for our health, but their uses in the body are not as all-encompassing as protein.

You may have heard that DNA controls the building blocks of life, and this is true. But proteins ARE the building blocks of life. Here is why. DNA has a very simple job; it decides which type of protein gets created, and when and where that protein is created. That is all! Everything in life, even your DNA is based around protein.

What is protein?

Proteins are made up of a combination of building blocks called amino acids. Different combinations of amino acids results in different proteins that can be used for all of the different structures and functions in the body.

Structure- You are literally constructed of protein. Muscle, skin, bone, nerves, organs and even blood cells are made of protein. If you want youthful skin, good muscle tone, strong bones and healthy organs you need to have adequate protein in your diet. If you restrict your protein intake, your body will wear out quickly and fall apart. Restricting your protein intake would be like asking a car manufacturer to build a good car without enough metal (or plastic these days). It just wouldn’t work. Your body can't work well without protein either because protein is the "metal" of all of the different structures of your body.

Hormones- An important group of compounds that keep you healthy and feeling good are hormones. Many hormones such as thyroid hormone, melatonin, insulin, growth hormones and adrenaline are made of protein. Other hormones that are not made of protein such as testosterone, estrogen and cortisol require certain proteins called enzymes in order to be manufactured in the body. So, without protein you could not make any of your body’s vital hormones.

Mood and Craving Control- Other important chemicals in the body are the neurotransmitters or as I like to call them, our "brain chemicals". Serotonin and dopamine are two common brain chemicals that help you feel good and give you motivation and a stable mood. Both of them, along with many other important brain chemicals, are made of protein. Without adequate protein intake you might experience anxiety, depression, insomnia, fatigue or uncontrollable cravings due to low production of these important brain chemicals.

Aging- In order to protect our bodies from damage you rely on a group of nutrients called antioxidants. Basically, antioxidants protect you from undergoing the same process that causes iron to rust. It is called oxidation and it is one of the primary causes of premature aging and chronic disease. The single most important antioxidant in the body is called glutathione and it is made directly from protein.  Restrict your protein and you risk excessive aging due to low antioxidant production. And here is an important fact- you can’t replace glutathione with other antioxidants like vitamin C. Glutathione has a specific role in protecting your body and only it can perform that protective role.

Cleansing- Another role of glutathione is to help your body cleanse itself of toxic materials. That by itself is enough reason to make sure to consume adequate protein. But glutathione is only a small piece of the detoxification process. And, you probably guessed it, the other pieces of the detoxification systems in your body requires protein as well. In fact, your liver requires at least 25 grams of protein a day just for its functions alone. So if you ever hear someone use the words “fasting” and “detoxing” in the same sentence, you know they are only harming themselves. You cannot cleanse or detoxify the body without adequate protein intake.

Immunity- Your immune system helps fight infections and to do this it uses specific types of immune boosting proteins. Consuming high quality protein can be a nice boost to your immune system. Without it your immune system would shut down and you would likely become ill from bacterial or viral infections.

Energy- Protein can act as an energy source for your body to burn as fuel but more importantly protein helps control blood sugar. Those who eat more protein tend to have more stable blood sugar as well as more sustained energy levels throughout the day.

Healing- If you cut our skin, break a bone or damage your joints, protein is required to build new healthy tissue. In other words, protein is required for healing.

Workout Performance and Recovery- When you exercise it causes microscopic damage to your muscles and bones. As long as you have enough protein available your body will respond by rebuilding your muscles and bones stronger than they were before the exercise. This is how exercise works. It is basically just controlled injury and healing and, as I mentioned above, without protein you can't heal. But as long as you consume adequate amounts of protein, exercise can help keep you young, strong and fit for life!
